We've learned a great deal about the markets over the past century. The most vital bit of wisdom? The market is smarter than any of us. Really, it's true. Second most influential bit of wisdom? Still too few folks believe the first bit… At Statera, we understand that investment markets naturally incorporate the collective knowledge of all investors. As prudent investors, we should like to take advantage of all that intelligence. Instead of attempting to be the smartest folks in the room, we bound our investment decisions with a rather simple set of rules:

  • Accept that the more return we seek, the more risk we must accept
  • Enhance diversification within our portfolios wherever possible and practical with an eye toward reducing overall portfolio risk
  • "Tilt" our investments toward those characteristics that show to have been supportive of greater-than-average returns over time

Indeed, "investing" can be seen as the easier part of the process. The greater challenge can be deciding where we want to be, how we'll get there. In turn, though we likely will need to adjust the plan to accommodate life's sometimes joyous and sometimes not-so-joyous surprises, we'll want to stick to the plan. Our Investment Approach therefore accepts that the greatest benefits advisors can provide to clients are:

  • Developing a realistic range of long-term financial goals and devising a rational investment plan that seeks to achieve them
  • Recognizing and managing through the financial and emotional barriers that can limit our progress toward those goals
  • Serving as a trusted partner, providing a voice of calm when market storms arise and a voice of reason when they appear exuberant

Statera seeks to support advisor efforts to address each of these goals. The foundation of that support is our suite of investment models that cover the entire range of potential client risk tolerance profiles, enabling advisors to provide a suitable response in most any investment situation they encounter.

And we want advisors to feel just as prepared to remain in control as conditions change. That's why all our models sit underneath one strategy, having been developed using a single, cohesive investment methodology. And they're designed to serve as whole- or core-portfolio solutions. Which means that the conversation remains the same, regardless the investment scenario.

We think our story allows for a relatively forthright conversation, while retaining a sophistication that we think will help advisors draw in new prospects, preserve existing clientele and, most importantly, improve investment outcomes.

...YET SOPHISTICATED

Our approach, which we've implemented for more than a decade, uses market history to inform how we differentiate exposures within each model in the search for incremental return. That excess return we have found more reliably comes from portfolio tilts toward those characteristics of stocks and bonds that have shown to have been the sources of extra return through time.

FOCUS ON FACTORS

And to gain access to those characteristics, our models comprise a range of mutual funds from Dimensional Fund Advisors (DFA) that we think offer best-in-class efficiency in providing access to our preferred investment characteristics.

SUPPORTING THE ADVISORY PRACTICE

Statera seeks not only to be a model provider to advisor investment practices. We also remain focused on providing additional tools advisors might utilize to convey our investment process and address market conditions as they evolve. Statera offers a range of client-approved materials via our monthly commentaries and podcasts that seek to educate advisors and their clients in a direct effort to support the decision to entrust client monies to our models. Our goal is not to pontificate on where the market's heading. Rather, we focus our work on helping clients understand where the market's been so that they might be mentally prepared for where we might be heading.
